A Bengaluru techie lost ₹1.1 lakh after clicking a fraudulent traffic fine link, with police investigating two such cases in Whitefield
Fraudulent Traffic Fine Payment Links on the Rise
After a recent APK file scam, incidents of fraudsters sharing dubious links for traffic fine payments are increasing. The Whitefield police in Bengaluru registered two such cases on January 4.
| Victim | Age | Occupation | Amount Lost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anurag Kumar Pandey | 27 | Software Engineer | ₹1,16,738 |
| Tarani Kumar Sharma | 38 | Private Firm Employee | ₹1,61,270 |
Anurag Kumar Pandey, 27, received a link from a random number asking him to pay a traffic fine. He thought the link was from the traffic police. After clicking the link, he found that ₹1,16,738 had been deducted from his credit card. Anurag stated that he received an OTP for the transaction but did not share it with anyone. Despite this, the transaction was completed.
In another case, Tarani Kumar Sharma, 38, reported losing ₹1,61,270 from her credit card, which was from the same bank as Anurag’s.
The Whitefield police have registered both cases. They are working to track down the accused using transaction details.
Karthik Reddy, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) in Bengaluru, advised people not to click on random links. He clarified that the traffic police do not send notices or request payments via phone.
