Delhi Police Register FIR and Detain Five in Violence Incident

On Wednesday, January 7, 2026, the Delhi Police registered an FIR and detained five people related to violence during an anti-encroachment drive near the Syed Faiz Elahi Mosque in Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan area, an official stated.

At least five police personnel were injured when some individuals allegedly threw stones and glass bottles at them. This occurred while the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) was conducting a court-mandated demolition on land next to the mosque and a nearby graveyard.

Tear gas shells were used to disperse the crowd and restore order. The police reported that five people were detained for questioning and to review CCTV footage.

Police are working to identify those involved in the stone-pelting incident. They are also investigating whether the violence was spontaneous or a planned effort to disrupt the demolition drive, the official added.

Senior police officers mentioned that they are analyzing CCTV footage and videos circulating on social media to identify the individuals involved. They are also recording statements from witnesses and detained persons as part of the investigation.

Details of the FIR and Demolition Drive

The FIR has been filed under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including 221 (Obstructing public servant), 132 (Assault on public servant), 121 (Causing hurt to public servant), 191 (Rioting), 223 (A) (Disobedience to public servant’s order), and 3(5) (Joint liability). It also includes provisions of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, 1984.

Meanwhile, an MCD official confirmed that the Syed Faiz Elahi Mosque was not damaged during the demolition drive. The civic body stated that the demolition was conducted following directions from the Delhi High Court.

Approximately 30 bulldozers and 50 dumpers were deployed to clear encroachments and remove debris from the site. Over 300 MCD workers and officials participated in the operation, which continued through the night, according to MCD officials.

The demolition cleared a large encroached area, including structures deemed illegal by the court. The police reported that law and order arrangements remain in place in the area as a precaution.

“The situation is under control and normalcy has been restored,” a senior officer stated, adding that strict legal action will be taken against those involved in the violence. Further investigation is ongoing.
