Prayagraj saw 100 drowning deaths in 2025, the highest unnatural cause, with ₹4 crore paid to victims’ families under disaster relief
Drowning Leads Unnatural Deaths in Prayagraj in 2025
Drowning was the leading cause of unnatural deaths in Prayagraj in 2025. There were 100 fatalities, making up nearly 59% of all cases eligible for compensation under the State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF). Official records indicate that 170 people died in various calamities covered under SDRF last year. The state government provided ₹6.80 crore in compensation to affected families.
Compensation for Drowning Victims
Families of drowning victims received a total of ₹4 crore, with each family getting ₹4 lakh. The state government recognized death by drowning as a disaster in 2021. This recognition allows families to receive financial assistance for deaths involving rivers, lakes, wells, canals, pits, or ponds.
Official Statements
ADM (Finance and Revenue) Vinita Singh stated that compensation was given to all SDRF-eligible families within the required timeframe in Prayagraj last year.
Other Causes of Unnatural Deaths
Snake bites caused 32 deaths, making it the second-highest cause of unnatural deaths. Compensation of ₹1.28 crore was released to the families of these victims. SDRF norms require a post-mortem examination to confirm the cause of death, but viscera reports are not needed in snake bite cases to avoid delays.
Additional Casualties
Lightning strikes resulted in 20 deaths, with families receiving ₹80 lakh in compensation. Other causes of death included storms (7 deaths), hailstorms (6 deaths), attacks by stray bulls (3 deaths), and fire incidents (2 deaths).
Compensation Process
Officials have been directed to transfer compensation within seven days after completing the documentation and verification process. The expanded SDRF list now includes snake bites, drowning, boat mishaps, and deaths from sewage cleaning or gas leakage.
