The closure of Elphinstone Bridge in Mumbai has led to severe traffic congestion in Dadar, particularly around Shivaji Park, due to poorly managed diversions and ongoing roadworks on Tilak Bridge.
Traffic Issues Due to Elphinstone Bridge Closure
The closure of Elphinstone Bridge in September last year has caused significant traffic problems in Dadar and nearby areas. The effects are now evident around Shivaji Park. Although the closure was meant to be temporary, the ongoing traffic diversions have created daily challenges for residents, commuters, pedestrians, and emergency vehicles.
Impact on Tilak Bridge
Tilak Bridge was chosen as a key alternative route after the Elphinstone Bridge shutdown. However, road repairs, Mumbai Road Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC) work, and utility digging have reduced its ability to handle the extra traffic. The carriageway is narrowed, and footpaths are dug up, causing slow vehicular movement, especially during peak hours.
Residents’ Concerns
Shivaji Park residents report worsening traffic conditions. “What used to be a 10-minute drive now takes nearly 45 minutes in the evening peak hours. There is constant honking, pollution, and chaos,” said Jyotsna Sawant, a senior citizen.
Specific Traffic Issues
The junction near the entrance of Shivaji Park, where the Meenatai Thackeray statue is located, is particularly affected. Traffic from Sena Bhavan towards the park has increased since the bridge closure and the work on Tilak Bridge. “The road from Sena Bhavan to this entrance remains choked round the clock,” said Vaibhav Rege, secretary of the Shivaji Park ALM.
Planning Criticism
Residents criticize the planning of alternative routes. “What is the point of announcing diversions if those roads are also dug up?” asked Deepa Prabhale, a resident. They noted that the Currey Road route is heavily used by ambulances, adding to the congestion.
Parking Issues
Residents also claim that a recent decision by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to allow parking on one side of Shivaji Park Road has worsened the situation. “There is a large BMC pay-and-park facility at Kohinoor Square, just a short walk from Shivaji Park,” Rege said. He suggested that the road should be a no-parking zone or reserved for specific groups.
Traffic Police Response
Traffic police officials acknowledge the difficulties in managing congestion. “Tilak Bridge was identified as an alternative route on the assumption that it would remain fully operational,” said traffic constable Shankar Patil. He noted that ongoing civil works have made traffic regulation challenging.
