On Monday, intensive cleaning was conducted at 1,373 bus shelters across all 15 zones of the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC).
The operation took place in Zones I to XV and occurred simultaneously citywide over a two-hour period. This activity is part of regular sanitation efforts at public places, including bus shelters, roads, bridges, burial grounds, and parks.
Daily Waste Management by GCC
According to a press release, the GCC removes an average of 6,300 metric tonnes of municipal solid waste each day. Additionally, around 1,000 metric tonnes of construction and demolition waste is cleared daily.
Details of the Cleaning Operation
The cleaning at bus shelters involved removing encroachments and posters, as well as clearing shrubs, garbage, and other solid waste around the shelters.
Designated officers monitored the work. The cleaning operations were carried out under their supervision.

The release noted that the intensive sanitation drive at bus shelters was also conducted on January 5, 2026, during the morning hours. This was part of ongoing solid waste management activities within the city limits.
