Hyderabad’s forest department imposes strict measures to ban Chinese manja sales due to threats to human lives, birds, and wildlife
Forest Department Takes Action Against Chinese Manja
The Forest Department has decided to prohibit the sale and purchase of Chinese manja. This decision aims to address the serious threat that Chinese manja poses to human lives, birds, and wildlife.
Review Meeting Held
A review meeting took place at Aranya Bhavan, led by Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF–HoFF) C. Suvarna. Officials from various departments attended the meeting. They discussed ways to identify and stop illegal activities related to the manufacture, supply, and sale of Chinese manja.
Manufacturing Hubs Identified
Ahmedabad, Mangaluru, and cities in Uttar Pradesh were identified as manufacturing hubs for the dangerous manja. C. Suvarna stated she would work with the PCCFs of these states to ensure coordination and joint action.
Public Awareness Initiatives
Every year, the use of Chinese manja leads to many accidents. Two-wheeler riders, children, and birds suffer serious injuries, which is a major concern. C. Suvarna emphasized the need for increased public awareness. She suggested that the Tourism Department and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) install warning boards and awareness materials about the dangers of manja.
Support from Film Industry
Efforts are underway to gain support from the film industry for awareness campaigns. Noted producer Dil Raju has been approached and responded positively. He offered support through initiatives involving film actors, especially during the Sankranti festival.
Inspections and Enforcement
The PCCF directed officials to conduct special inspections with the Police Department at shops and locations suspected of illegal stocking and sale of Chinese manja. She instructed strict action against shop owners who violate norms, including registering cases and seizing illegally stored Chinese manja.
Collaboration with Various Departments
Officials from the Information and Public Relations Department, Biodiversity Board, Transport Department, Endowments Department, Police Department, and other relevant departments participated in the review meeting. They shared suggestions on actions to be taken within their respective areas.
