Investigation Requested After Jackal Deaths at University

The student body has requested an investigation into possible disease outbreaks after about five jackals were found dead on campus in the last two weeks.

The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) urged the administration to investigate the deaths of the jackals and any potential diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans.

On Monday, the Chief Medical Officer of Delhi acknowledged the situation.

According to the student group, around five jackals were found dead in the last two weeks. JNUSU stated that students contacted the non-profit organization WildlifeSOS after discovering another dead jackal on Saturday. The body has been sent for a postmortem to determine the cause of death.

“A disease outbreak among jackals increases the potential risk of zoonoses [animal to man diseases] through contaminated water and waste,” the statement added. The union also asked students to report any additional jackal deaths.
