A 25-year-old man in Delhi’s Laxmi Nagar allegedly killed his mother, sister, and brother after feeding them sedative-laced sweets, citing financial stress
Man Allegedly Murders Family in East Delhi
A 25-year-old man allegedly murdered his mother, sister, and 14-year-old brother at their home in Laxmi Nagar, east Delhi. Police reported on Monday that the accused claimed he was “under severe financial stress” and had not worked for several months. Investigators stated that he allegedly fed his family sweets laced with a sedative before strangling them.
Accused Surrenders to Police
The accused, identified as Yashveer Singh, is a cab driver. He walked into the Laxmi Nagar police station around 5 PM on Monday and surrendered. He confessed to killing his family and told officers he mixed “dhatura,” a poisonous plant, into the sweets. However, police noted that the exact substance used is still being confirmed, as Singh has changed his statements multiple times.
Details of the Incident
Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Abhishek Dhania stated that Singh informed the police he killed his family due to financial issues. “Around 5 PM, Singh came to Laxmi Nagar police station and stated that because of financial distress, he had killed his family members,” Dhania said. Police teams rushed to the address provided by Singh and found the bodies of his mother, sister, and brother inside the house. Investigations are ongoing.
Victims Identified
| Relation | Name | Age |
|---|---|---|
| Mother | Kavita Singh | 46 |
| Sister | Meghana | 23 |
| Brother | Mukul | 14 |
The family had been living in a rented three-bedroom flat on the first floor for the past two years. Yashveer’s father works as a truck driver and does not live at the Laxmi Nagar house. He visits occasionally but is mostly away for work. An officer stated that Singh had not paid the ₹20,000 rent for the last seven months and was under pressure.
Triggering Events
Investigators noted that the final trigger for the alleged murders was Yashveer’s wife leaving him. “His wife left him on Sunday after an argument over his gambling habits and alleged drug addiction. This appears to have deeply affected him,” an officer said.
During interrogation, Singh claimed he had taken out a life insurance policy worth ₹1.5 crore and had made multiple suicide attempts in the past. These claims are being verified. Investigators said that on Monday, his mother allegedly scolded him for his behavior.
Statements and Investigation
Another officer reported that Yashveer told police his mother’s remarks triggered him. “He claimed that his mother said something along the lines of everyone dying to end the family’s problems. He says this provoked him, but he keeps changing his version,” the officer said.
According to his latest statement, he fed his family sweets mixed with a sedative between 2 PM and 3 PM on Monday. After they became unconscious, he allegedly strangled all three with a muffler around 3 PM, police said.
Forensic Investigation
Forensic science laboratory teams collected samples from the flat. Police stated that post-mortem examinations will determine the exact cause of death and whether any poison or sedative was present in the victims’ bodies.
Community Reaction
Neighbors described the family as “deeply religious” and mostly withdrawn. Sanjeev Kumar, a nearby resident, said Yashveer’s wife rarely stayed at the house and worked in Gurugram. “He was mostly jobless. The family was very religious and kept to themselves,” Kumar said.
Another resident, Kailash Sharma, noted, “We never heard any fights or anything. We never knew what was happening as nobody interacted with each other.”
Current Status
Police reported that Yashveer has been arrested and is being interrogated. His wife and father have been asked to join the investigation.
