Mumbai’s R North Central and South wards include SGNP beaches and industrial zones with civic challenges ahead of BMC polls
BMC Poll Date Approaches: Overview of R North, Central, and South Wards
As the BMC poll date nears, mid-day examines the R North, Central, and South wards. These wards include the lush Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), quiet beaches, gaothans, and industrial zones.
The R ward in Greater Mumbai is located between Malad and Dahisar. It serves as an entry point to the city from Mira Bhayandar, Vasai-Virar, and Uttan in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
R South ward includes areas in Malad. R Central ward covers Kandivli and Gorai, while R North ward includes Dahisar, marking the boundary between MMR and Greater Mumbai. About 60% of the combined R ward is part of SGNP, which contains two reservoirs, Vihar and Tulsi, that supply drinking water to Mumbai.
Before the 2000s, the region was split into R North and South wards, with around 5% of the area designated as an industrial zone for major automobile manufacturers.
The area attracts many tourists and is often called Mumbai’s Goa due to Gorai’s beaches, gaothans, and attractions like shacks and sea sports. EsselWorld was located in Gorai, and the Dahisar river flows through the area. Approximately 27% of the ward is residential, with high demand for spacious homes in new high-rise buildings.
The Western Express Highway (WEH) runs through the R wards and has seen transit-oriented development in the last decade. Homes near this corridor are in high demand.
