Bihar State Road Development Corporation Advances Elevated Road Project

The Bihar State Road Development Corporation (BSRDC) is working towards an early completion of the four-lane Mithapur-Mahuli elevated road project. This follows the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) approving the construction of a flyover on NH-31 near the new bypass, according to a senior officer of the corporation on Sunday.

“Our managing director Shirsat Kapil Ashok has been regularly monitoring the scheme to ensure its completion by August this year. Chief secretary Pratyay Amrit has also directed the BSRDC to expedite work on it,” the officer stated. The project has faced delays due to late clearance of the design by the NHAI.

The state cabinet approved the project in 2020 to reduce traffic on the Patna-Gaya road section towards the new bypass. It has missed several deadlines. Initially, the completion was set for 2022, but design modifications and procedural delays in obtaining no-objection from the NHAI for the flyover have slowed progress.

“The NHAI had previously raised concerns about the design of the elevated road’s crossing with the bypass. We received clearance from the NHAI only recently. The agency had halted pillar construction for about a year. After modifying the design, the NHAI has now given the green light, and work on the pillars has already begun,” the officer added.

The pillars are being constructed on the new bypass to connect the southern and northern sections of the elevated road. The crossing is designed to be 5.5 meters high to allow smooth passage for heavy commercial vehicles. This will ensure seamless integration between the elevated road and the bypass.

The overall project, which includes extensions to Punpun, is being developed in phases. The first phase, from Sipara to Mahuli (approximately 5.4 km elevated out of 6.7 km four-lane road), was completed and inaugurated by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in June 2025. Vehicles are currently using this stretch via ramps near Bhupatipur. The second phase focuses on the critical Mithapur to Sipara section, which is about 2.2 km long and has faced delays due to design objections from the NHAI.

Officials indicate that the construction of pillars on the bypass will allow the elevated road to pass over it smoothly. This will connect directly to other flyovers and significantly reduce travel time. Once completed, commuters from southern Patna will be able to reach various parts of the city without facing vehicular congestion, making inter-district travel much easier.
