Public Works Department Begins Painting Speed Breakers in Aarey Milk Colony

The Public Works Department (PWD) has started painting speed breakers on the internal roads of Aarey Milk Colony. This action follows a report by mid-day that highlighted the dangers of unmarked speed breakers. The aim is to improve visibility and enhance safety for motorists and two-wheeler riders, especially at night.

Background of the Issue

On January 3, mid-day published a report stating that the PWD had begun installing speed breakers in Aarey to protect commuters and wildlife. However, many of these speed breakers lacked reflective paint and warning signs. This made them hard to see after dark, creating risks for two-wheeler riders. After the report, the PWD began painting white markings on the speed breakers.

Community Response

Aarey resident Aditya Shinde welcomed the PWD’s actions. He said, “It is encouraging to see that following a mid-day report, the authorities have taken note of the issue and begun painting the speed breakers. We hope the markings will be repainted regularly once they fade.” He added that proper signage and cat’s eyes are important for visibility and safety.

Current Observations

On Tuesday, mid-day visited Aarey Milk Colony and saw that several speed breakers had been painted white. However, some paint was already fading. Local residents suggested using better-quality paint for longer-lasting visibility. PWD sources stated that an additional coat of white paint will be applied to the already painted speed breakers to prevent quick fading.

Previous Reports and Wildlife Concerns

Earlier, on March 5, mid-day reported that the PWD was working on Aarey roads after a survey identified 43 wildlife crossing points. This survey was conducted by members of the Urban Joint Forest Management Committees. Their findings were submitted to the additional principal chief conservator of forests, Western Wildlife Region. The Aarey police also suggested locations for speed breakers on the main road to the BMC, but no progress has been made.

Ecological Importance of Aarey Milk Colony

Aarey Milk Colony is an ecologically sensitive area, with 812 acres within the SGNP boundary. It is home to diverse wildlife, including leopards, jungle cats, spotted deer, sambar deer, rusty-spotted cats, small Indian civets, palm civets, and various reptiles and birds.
