The Salem District Cyber Crime police arrested 36 individuals for cyber fraud in 2025.
The number of cyber crime cases is rising each year in the district. Despite police awareness programs and warnings about advertisements, more people are being cheated by online fraudsters annually.
Complaints and Financial Losses
In 2025, the Cyber Crime police received 3,242 complaints about cyber fraud, both financial and non-financial. This is double the 1,882 complaints received in 2024.
The police registered First Information Reports (FIR) in 45 cases and provided Community Service Registers (CSR) for 3,197 complaints. In 2024, there were 56 FIRs and 1,826 CSR cases. The total financial loss from cyber fraud in 2025 was ₹20 crore, an increase of ₹7.20 crore from ₹12.80 crore in 2024.
Recovery Efforts
In 2025, the Cyber Crime Police recovered ₹1.40 crore and froze ₹6.20 crore. In 2024, the police recovered ₹1.01 crore and froze ₹10.20 crore.
Additionally, the police recovered around 747 lost mobile phones in 2025.
Nature of Complaints
Officials from the Cyber Crime Police noted that many complaints in 2025 were about job fraud and promises of high investment returns. Most victims were highly educated individuals. The police conducted 60 awareness programs in schools and colleges in 2025.
Officials urged that if people lose money due to cyber fraud, they should file a complaint quickly. This can help in freezing the money or removing altered images from the internet.
