A 25-year-old man in Delhi’s Laxmi Nagar confessed to killing his mother, sister, and brother, with police investigating a possible suicide pact amid financial stress
Man Confesses to Killing Family in East Delhi
Police reported on Tuesday that a 25-year-old man confessed to killing his mother, sister, and 14-year-old brother at their home in east Delhi’s Laxmi Nagar. He has been charged with the murders while authorities investigate the possibility of a failed suicide pact.
Details of the Incident
| Victim | Age | Cause of Death |
|---|---|---|
| Mother | Unknown | Pesticide and strangulation |
| Sister | Unknown | Sweets and strangulation |
| Brother | 14 | Sweets and strangulation |
Officers stated that two victims collapsed after consuming sweets, while the mother was allegedly given pesticide before all were strangled with a muffler. The accused, identified as Yashveer Singh, a cab driver, surrendered at the Laxmi Nagar police station around 5 PM on Monday. He confessed to the murders, citing financial stress as the motive.
Confession and Investigation
Singh claimed he mixed dhatura, a poisonous plant, into the sweets he fed his family. However, police noted that the exact substance is still unconfirmed, as Singh has changed his statements multiple times. He had not been unemployed for six months, and the family had not paid rent for seven months.
During interrogation, Singh reportedly broke down and said he convinced his family to end their lives with him due to financial struggles. He mentioned that his wife left him on Friday and that he had ongoing disputes with his mother and sister over money.
Police Findings
Police found two of the laddoos at Singh’s home. They learned that while the two siblings collapsed after eating the sweets, the mother did not. Singh allegedly fed her pesticide tablets before strangling all three with a muffler around 1 PM. Two packets of the tablets were discovered in the house.
Investigators revealed that Singh had pressured his father, Dharamveer Singh, to transfer family properties to him, which he then sold. Family members stated that Dharamveer owned land in their village and had initially refused to sell. Singh sold part of the property worth ₹60 lakh and an ancestral house worth ₹1 crore in 2020-21.
Family Statements
On Tuesday, the bodies were handed over to the family after post-mortem. Dharamveer denied any financial issues, stating that Yashveer had sold their village home for ₹60 lakhs two months ago. He claimed Yashveer lied about financial problems while dining at high-end restaurants.
Police reported that Yashveer’s wife left him due to allegations of harassment for money. A relative, Jaspal Singh, noted that the family was once well-off, with Dharamveer owning several properties. Yashveer had participated in state-level weightlifting competitions as a teenager but stopped after a hand injury in 2017-18.
Yashveer married his wife against the family’s wishes in 2017-18. They moved to Laxmi Nagar in 2020, where his family later joined them. Dharamveer did not live with them due to his disapproval of the marriage, as Yashveer’s wife is from a different community.
