Tiruchi Corporation will survey 310 parks to assess maintenance needs and prioritize repairs after resident complaints about neglect in residential areas
Tiruchi Corporation to Survey Public Parks
Tiruchi Corporation has decided to conduct a survey of public parks across the city. The goal is to assess their condition and identify parks that need immediate repair and maintenance.
Many parks that were once busy are now in disrepair. Residents have claimed that parks in prime areas receive priority while those in residential areas are neglected.
After receiving repeated complaints about the poor upkeep of parks, the civic body proposed a survey of all Corporation-maintained parks, roadside parks, and open-air gyms. There are about 310 public parks, 108 playgrounds, and 39 open-air gyms in the city’s five zones.
Officials stated that the initiative aims to evaluate basic amenities. This includes walking tracks, children’s play equipment, benches, lighting, compound walls, toilets, and landscaping. The survey will also identify safety concerns and encroachments.
Based on the findings, the Corporation plans to create a prioritized action plan for restoring and upgrading parks. Necessary work will be done in phases, depending on the availability of funds, according to the official.
Proposed Repairs and Budget
As part of the initiative, repair and maintenance work is proposed at several parks. These include a public park on Kalaivanar Street in Ward 55, Mangamma Nagar Park in Ward 7, Moovendhar Nagar Park in Ward 15, parks in Periyar Nagar in Ward 61, Raja Colony in Ward 53, and another park in Ward 52. The total estimated cost for these repairs is ₹23 lakh.
The civic body had earlier planned to outsource the maintenance and operation of major parks. However, this initiative did not receive a positive response from private agencies.
Allocations were made in the 2025-26 Budget for developing roadside parks and walkways at Royal Road, William Road, and near Rettai Vaikal in Thillai Nagar. However, the works have yet to be executed.
