A 41-year-old woman, Geetha, died after being set on fire by a man for rejecting his marriage proposal. She fought for survival for 20 days, according to police.

Geetha sustained over 50% burn injuries. She died while receiving treatment at Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru on the night of January 6.

Incident Details

The incident took place in Bhovi Colony, where Geetha operated a provision store. The accused, Muthu Abhimanyu, 31, ran a tea stall nearby and was known to Geetha. After they became acquainted, Geetha, her 19-year-old daughter, and Muthu lived together in the same house, police reported.

Investigations showed that Muthu pressured Geetha to marry him. When she refused, he allegedly poured petrol on her and set her on fire in a fit of rage.

Geetha suffered severe burns and was taken to Victoria Hospital for treatment. Despite doctors’ efforts, she succumbed to her injuries.

Legal Actions

The Basaveshwaranagar police registered a case and arrested Muthu shortly after the incident. Following Geetha’s death, the case changed from attempt-to-murder to murder.
