Delhi plans to launch a 40-seater Yamuna cruise by February, offering leisure and cultural experiences along a 5-km stretch of the river
Delhi Government to Launch Yamuna Cruise Services in February
The Delhi government plans to start the Yamuna cruise recreational services in February. This information was shared by Delhi tourism minister Kapil Mishra during his inspection of the under-construction cruise in Mumbai on Monday.
Details of the Cruise
The 40-seater cruise boat will be transported to Delhi for engine installation. It will offer an hour-long trip with food and music.
Mishra stated, “The cruise vessel is almost ready and will be transported from Mumbai to Delhi on January 20. The journey is expected to take three to four days, after which the engine will be installed. Once it reaches Delhi, the remaining technical work will be completed, and the chief minister will launch it in February.”
Additional Features and Plans
The government also plans to provide water sports activities and develop a recreational zone along the river. Mishra noted, “It will be an international luxury experience at affordable prices.”
This project is part of a broader plan to create a recreation-and-leisure hub along the Yamuna. Mishra added that this initiative would allow Delhi residents to enjoy experiences similar to those in popular tourist destinations.
Operational Details
The Delhi government previously announced a cruise service on the Yamuna as part of its river rejuvenation and tourism development plan. The one-hour cruise will operate between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur, covering a 5-km stretch of the Yamuna. Passengers will enjoy panoramic views of the ghats and the natural landscape along the riverbanks.
Facilities and Experiences
The jetties will include boarding zones, ticket counters, and waiting areas. Mishra mentioned that the cruise is designed as a hybrid of leisure and cultural experience, featuring a restaurant and open seating for dining while sailing.
The department also plans to include live performances showcasing Delhi’s traditional art and music. An official stated, “The onboard experience will blend relaxation, dining, and Delhi’s artistic charm.” Private event bookings may also be explored later for financial sustainability.
Community Engagement and Accessibility
“The idea is not just to create another tourist attraction, but to help people reconnect with the Yamuna. When citizens experience the river up close, it builds a sense of pride and responsibility to keep it clean. This project is as much about awareness as it is about leisure,” said the official.
Affordability and accessibility are central to this project. Ticket prices will be finalized after approval from tourism minister and chief minister Rekha Gupta. The goal is to make it affordable for families, students, and tourists.
Transport Connectivity
The tourism department is working with the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) to connect the jetties with nearby metro stations for easier last-mile connectivity. The service will likely run multiple trips during morning and evening to maximize the scenic experience.
